A: When is Mother’s Day in Korea?
한국에서는 언제가 어머니 날이지요?

B: Well, we used to have Mother’s Day many years ago.
음, 여러 해 전에는 어머니날이 있었어요.

Now we have Parents’ Day, and it’s celebrated on May 8th.
지금은 어버이날이 있고, 5월 8일에 기념합니다.

How about America?
미국은 어때요?

A: We have separate Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.
우리는 어머니날과 아버지날이 따로 있어요.

In addition, Parents’ Day is observed on the fourth Sunday in July.
그리고, 어버이날은 7월 네번째 일요일이에요.

B: I see.
그렇군요.

A: Any special events on that day?
그날에는 특별한 행사를 하나요?

B: I usually give them a red carnation to wear and give them presents in the morning.
저는 보통 아침에 빨간 카네이션을 달아 드리고 선물을 드립니다.

And then we get together for dinner in the evening.
그리고 저녁에는 같이 모여서 저녁 식사를 해요.

A: I normally send a card with gifts or flowers since I live far away from my parents’.
저는 부모님과 멀리 떨어져 살기 때문에 보통 카드를 선물이나 꽃과 함께 보내요.

But it’s not the same as gathering for dinner.
그렇지만, 모여서 저녁식사를 함께 하는 것과 같을 수는 없지요.

B: Hmm, that’s a downside of living apart in a big country.
음, 그게 큰 나라에서 멀리 떨어져 사는 단점이네요.
